4.1 (selecting instructional strategies and materials)

Candidate understands the purposes and characteristics of different kinds of curricula and related teaching resources and select or create instructional materials that are consistent with what is currently known about student learning in ELA.

My biggest challenge in my student teaching experience was finding ways to make the parts of grammar and punctuation fun and memorable. I know that students learn best when feelings are applied to the learning, so I incorporated into my lesson some humor and a fun, colorful competitive-style "game" including Peeps Marshmallow Candies.

To teach misplaced modifiers, I found humorous examples on the internet that exemplified the error.
To teach irregular verbs and a lesson in pronouns, I created the Peeps game in which students raised the appropriate Peep to respond to the multiple-choice answer.

The Peeps were helpful to me because I could tell instantly how many students struggled with the question.

Attached is the PowerPoint that I used to guide the class through learning those grammar implements. The students seemed to enjoy the lesson and every student was actively participating and getting responses from both me and their peers on the answer (Peep) they chose.
